Julia Esmeralda

I like taking pictures of the sky, good ramen and well-kerned type. Everything once: trying out new things is cool!

For me, design is something that satisfies both my obsession with aesthetics and the human compulsion to help others. I’m always looking to draw inspiration from unexpected sources and expand my contextual knowledge base through creation and cultural investment.

What is the most useful piece of design advice that you have received?

Trust in the process and take ownership!

Other than design, what creative fields interest you most?

Literature and writing, I think words hold a lot of power.

If you could learn any new skill or talent, what would it be?

Dance, film photography, new languages. I’ll get there!

How would you describe the colour yellow to someone who has never seen it?

Pale yellow is early spring; soft light peeking through the clouds, a fresh start. Brighter, it’s a field of sunflowers, honey dripping, light steps and a soaring heart. Yellow is light and joy personified.

After Dark App Design

Scenario: It’s 2am and you and your friend just got kicked out of the bar. You don’t feel like going home quite yet… where to next?

After Dark is a food-centric iOS app that allows you to navigate the city late at night.

It tells you about all the restaurants, bars, and cafes open nearby as well as provide venue details and turn by turn navigation. Users can personalize their experience with search filters, reviews, share location features, and My Places. This project was created in collaboration with Mary Anne Cruz and Yasmeen Tawfeek.

Map View vs. Grid View

The main screen of the app is the ‘Map View’ that shows the users location and the establishments that are open around the user. Clicking an establishment will lead to a pop-up on the bottom of the screen with key information such as opening time and distance, and clicking the pop-up will lead to a more detailed page which includes user reviews. Other than that, there is also a ‘Grid View’ that lists out the establishments near the user in order of distance.

A search function is also available for specific searches. Once a user decided on a place to go to, the app enables turn-by-turn navigation to help users get to their destination.

Personalization and Filters

Since personalization is an important aspect to take into consideration, the app has several features to address this. There is a robust filter function that allows the user to filter desired establishments based on distance, price, and categories.

Another feature is the ability to save establishments into a ‘My Places’ section so users would be able to view their favourite venues easily.

Venue Information and Sharing

The individual venue pages provide more information on the venues along with reviews and pictures. From this page, users are also able to contact the venue, add it to their favourites, or share the venue page and location to their contacts.
